Installing & Servicing A Wide Range Of Heat Pumps In Ottawa

A heat pump does exactly what its name implies–it pumps heat into your home during the cold months and out of your home during the warm months. It works by absorbing heat from one location and moving it to another. Therefore, it acts as an air conditioner and a heating source.

A heat pump installation comprises two parts: indoor and outdoor components.
The heat pump indoor component is normally known as an air handler and looks similar to a typical gas furnace.
The heat pump outdoor component looks exactly like a central air conditioning system. It can improve the air quality in your home by moving air from outside into your home and vice versa.

Energy Efficient Heating & Cooling

Heat Pumps Help You Save On Utility Bills

People often think that heat pumps in Ottawa are expensive to run since they operate on electricity. That’s a fair assumption to make since electricity is more expensive than natural gas in this region. However, the truth is that heat pumps can help reduce your total utility expenses every month! Heat pumps have a much higher coefficient of performance (COP) rating than gas, propane or electric furnaces. This means that heat pumps generate more heat (or remove more heat in the summer) for each unit of energy that they use. So even though electricity costs more than natural gas, using a heat pump in your Ottawa home will bring you significant savings!

A Safer Alternative For Heating

Heat Pumps Are Safer Than Gas Furnaces

Carbon monoxide is a by-product of the combustion process that gas furnaces use to generate heat in the home. Heat pumps don’t use this combustion process as they use electricity to pump heat into the home. Combining a heat pump and an electric furnace can ensure that you have a heating system that has no risk of leaking carbon monoxide, and is energy efficient. Advanced HVAC FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is an electrically driven device installed outside your home that provides heating and cooling for your home. A heat pump is powered by electricity and transfers heat via a refrigerant, providing comfortable temperatures in a home all year round. Heat pumps offer high efficiency for temperature control. While some systems are ductless, others are designed to work with ducts or as part of a hybrid setup.

What kind of maintenance is needed for heat pumps?

One of the major benefits of a heat pump is that it requires little maintenance to operate efficiently and effectively. It’s important to keep indoor filters clean, and they should be washed or vacuumed every couple of months. The external portion of a heat pump system should be cleared of snow in the winter months to prevent potential malfunctions. Lastly, an annual coil clean should be performed by a certified technician. Contact us to learn more or to get a quote for a heat pump for your home!

How do I know what size heat pump to buy for my home?

There are a number of variables to consider before deciding which size of heat pump is best for you. In addition to the size of the space you are looking to heat/cool, it is important to know whether the heat pump will be for a ducted system or a mini-split (aka ductless), how important cooling is, and whether you will need a variable-speed compressor. That is a lot to figure out on your own, so we suggest you contact us today to speak with a certified HVAC professional. We can help you figure out exactly what you need.

How are heat pumps rated for efficiency?

Heat pump efficiency is commonly measured using the HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). The higher the HSPF, the more efficient a heat pump is. HSPF is the ratio of the total heat pump output over the entire season to the electricity used during that time. If you want to know more about heat pump efficiency, contact us today.

What is the average lifespan of a heat pump?

How long your heat pump lasts depends on several factors, such as the type of heat pump and how well it is maintained. On average, you can expect your heat pump to last 18 years. Regular maintenance of your heat pump will increase its lifespan, saving you money in the long run. If you believe a heat pump is the right option for you, contact us today.

What is the benefit of having a heat pump?

Because a heat pump only uses electricity for moving air rather than heating/cooling it, it is extremely efficient. When you use a heat pump along with a primary heating system such as oil, gas, or electric, you will see the heat pump offset the amount of primary fuel use. One heat pump can offset hundreds of litres of oil in a typical home over time, saving money and reducing your environmental impact.

How do heat pumps work? How are they different from furnaces?

Simply put, heat pumps extract heat from one place and transfer it to another. They circulate refrigerant through a cycle of evaporation and condensation. The main difference between heat pumps and furnaces is that furnaces create heat while heat pumps simply transfer it. When in heating mode, a heat pump absorbs energy from outside (even in cold temperatures) and transfers it inside. When in cooling mode, a heat pump acts as an air conditioner and absorbs heat from inside and releases it outside. Because they are not creating heat, heat pumps are super efficient.

Are heat pumps a good option for homes in Ottawa, Ontario?

Yes, heat pumps in Ottawa, Ontario, are gaining popularity due to their efficiency throughout the year—even in colder climates. Modern developments have enabled heat pumps in Ottawa, Ontario, to work reliably during the winter season, keep energy bills low, and minimize reliance on conventional heating systems.
