What to do in the event of an HVAC emergency

If you smell gas or hear your carbon monoxide alarm going off, you will want to take extra precautions. Natural gas is normally odourless, but gas manufacturers add a chemical called mercaptan which gives it a smell of rotten eggs. Carbon Monoxide is odourless, however each home should have a carbon monoxide alarm. If you smell rotten eggs, or hear your carbon monoxide alarm going off, take the following steps.

DO NOT turn on any appliances, motor vehicles, smoke, or light any fires.
Do not use your phone anywhere near the suspected leak.
Go outside and leave the area immediately

Why does my furnace smell like rotten eggs?

If your gas furnace smells like rotten eggs, this is a serious cause for concern. Natural gas itself is naturally odourless. Because of this, gas and utility companies add a harmless chemical called mercaptan to natural gas to help us identify gas leaks. If you smell sulphur or rotten eggs in your home and have a natural gas furnace, it is possible you are experiencing a natural gas leak. If you suspect there is a natural gas leak in your home, you should:

Evacuate your home immediately and leave the door open.
Don’t turn on any lights, use electrical switches, telephones, appliances, garage door openers, etc.

Why is changing filters important for preventing HVAC emergencies?

As filters are used, they capture particles in the air to prevent them from being run through your HVAC unit and into your home. In a time of crisis, in a time where time has huge importance, the support from competent,  hard working technicians saved us from a catastrophe.Following 48 hours of no heat in a mixed use building, with a commercial tenant trying to keep a store open with interior temperaures falling to 6 deg.C, residential tenants complaining rightly so to me, the landlord, facing a 3rd night of minus 20 deg.C , with water starting to freeze in our pipes, i turned to ADVANCED hVAC for help. A new boiler was ordered at the end of these 48 hours. The next morning a team from ADVANCED HVAC removed the defunct boiler . By 6pm that day the new boiler was warming our cold radiators. The attitude of the entire team, their dedication  to finish the job before a third cold night, the efficiency of these guys at work was superb . The price was reasonable ,fair and worth every dollar.
